Senior Clinical Scientist

Date: 10 Feb 2026

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, AU, 3000

Company: Healius

Why You’ll Be Excited About This Role

At Healius, we all have one thing in common: we’re passionate about making a difference to the health of Australians. Right now, it’s an exciting time to join us as we transform into a stronger, more agile organisation focused on precision medicine, excellent customer and patient experiences, smarter ways of working, whilst providing a great place to work.

In this Senior Clinical Scientist position with Genomic Diagnostics, the national genomics service for Healius Pathology, you’ll be working at the cutting edge of clinical genomics in oncology and inherited disease, supporting clinicians and patients across Australia. As a senior subject matter expert, you’ll help shape how we respond to growing oncology and inherited disease volumes and evolve our genomics services.

What makes this role stand out is the flexibility it offers: if you’re looking to step into more leadership, you can. If you’d prefer to focus deeply on high‑level scientific work without people management, that’s possible too. For someone with the right expertise and skillset, this is an opportunity to make the role your own and shape it around your strengths and goals.

About Us

Genomic Diagnostics is the national genomics service for the Healius Pathology network. We provide comprehensive genomic testing, spanning oncology, reproductive health, inherited disease and pharmacogenomics, to an extensive network of public and private hospitals and community referrers across Australia. Our primary focus is to provide high-quality and timely genomic information to assist in diagnosis and clinical decision-making.

Healius has an expansive network of over 100 medical laboratories and 2000 patient collection centres operating across metropolitan, regional and remote Australia. We provide 1 in every 3 pathology services in Australia, extending from exclusively servicing some of Australia’s largest and most complex private and public hospitals, to small Indigenous Australian communities.

About the Role

In this role, you will be a trusted senior member of the Genomic Diagnostics team based at our Heidelberg laboratory, providing high‑level clinical and scientific expertise across our oncology and inherited genomics portfolio. You’ll work closely with pathologists, clinicians and laboratory colleagues to support the increasing volume of oncology testing, contribute to the evolution of our genomics capabilities, and help drive improvements in testing quality, turnaround times and scientific rigour. The scope of this senior role is intentionally flexible and can be shaped around your strengths, whether you want to maintain people‑leadership responsibilities or focus purely on specialist scientific work.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform complex variant analysis and clinical interpretation for NGS‑based assays, including whole exome sequencing.
  • Prepare, review and authorise high‑quality genomic reports for oncology and inherited disease.
  • Ensure all testing and reporting meets NPAAC/NATA ISO15189 requirements and internal quality standards.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to scientists, trainees and clinical colleagues on variant curation and complex case interpretation.
  • Support optimisation of laboratory workflows and processes to manage increasing oncology testing volumes and improve turnaround times.
  • Contribute to service development and continuous improvement initiatives across the genomics portfolio.
  • Maintain high standards of laboratory practice, including documentation, QC, QAP participation and equipment oversight.
  • Escalate complex, abnormal or urgent results appropriately to the Chief Scientist, Clinical Director or Pathologists.
  • The potential to lead a high-performing team.

About You

You’re an experienced Clinical Scientist with deep expertise in genomic diagnostics and confidence in interpreting complex NGS data. You bring strong scientific judgement, extensive hands‑on experience with high‑complexity testing, and the ability to operate at a senior level within a clinical laboratory environment. You’re motivated by the opportunity to apply your specialist knowledge to challenging oncology and inherited genomics cases and to help shape the development of a growing national service.

To be successful, you will need to meet the mandatory requirements:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Science/Medical Science, with a Masters in diagnostic genomics or equivalent.

FHGSA (Molecular Genetics) or Fellowship of RCPA – Faculty of Science, or equivalent professional fellowship, or PhD.

  • Significant clinical or diagnostic laboratory experience (ideally 8+ years) within genomics, molecular pathology or related disciplines.
  • Strong experience with whole exome and/or whole genome sequencing, including variant curation, interpretation and clinical reporting.
  • Expertise in hereditary cancer, somatic oncology, and/or haematological neoplasms.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high‑quality, clinically robust genomic reports in a diagnostic environment.
  • Strong understanding of QC, QAP, troubleshooting, and experience operating within NATA/ISO15189 and NPAAC frameworks.
  • A track record of contributing to laboratory or service improvements, with a focus on scientific accuracy, efficiency and diagnostic quality.

We believe everyone leads, no matter what role they are in. Our ways of leading are the behaviours that we expect our people to embody and are: Customer Focused, Accountable, Collaborative, Credible & Resourceful.
