About the role 

We are seeking an experienced Scientist to join our Microbiology Department at our Murarrie laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Microbiologist to contribute to a high-performing team engaged in complex and varied diagnostic work, including human bacteriology, mycology, tuberculosis (TB), and veterinary microbiology testing.

Your responsibilites are as below:

  • Performing culture, identification, and susceptibility testing using both traditional and automated diagnostic systems in a busy, accredited laboratory environment
  • May participate in TB culture and identification workflows, ensuring strict adherence to biosafety and quality protocols
  • May process and analyse veterinary microbiology specimens, applying sound microbiological judgment to a wide range of sample types
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation and automation platforms (e.g., MALDI-TOF, Virtuo, Vitek)
  • Maintain high standards of quality control, documentation, and data integrity in compliance with NATA accreditation and QML policies
  • Assist in method validation, equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Support staff training, competency assessment, and contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Uphold and promote laboratory safety and infection control standards

 

About you

To be considered for this position, you will need to meet the essential requirements: 

  • Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Microbiology, Biomedical Science  or a related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in diagnostic bacteriology preferably in a NATA or similar accredited laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience in culture-based diagnostics, organism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing
  • Familiarity with Mycology and TB culture techniques and an understanding of containment procedures for higher biosafety level organisms an advantage
  • Experience with veterinary microbiology is highly regarded
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong teamwork, communication and organisational skills
