About the role
We are seeking an experienced Scientific Officer who is highly motivated to become part of a passionate, vibrant and engaged team who will be responsible for:
- Performing all routine procedures in the Molecular Diagnostics laboratory; from point of specimen reception through to experiment analysis, reporting and validation of results
- Processing of specimens, within a biological safety cabinet, including urines, swabs (various sites), and faeces
- Performing manual and automated DNA/RNA extraction and PCR for diagnostic testing, ensuring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Working as part of a team to efficiently manage and prioritise workloads and able to work under pressure with minimal supervision
- Complying with Policies and Procedures, Workplace Health and Safety Procedures and Quality Assurance Processes
- Maintaining and operating equipment in line with standard operating procedures
- Compliance with records maintenance and recording of results in line with protocols
- Assisting with Stock Control to ensure adequate reagents and consumables
- Maintaining current scientific knowledge
- Participation in both routine and audit related Quality Assurance activities
- Contributing to continuous improvement
- Participating in training of staff
- After training during the day, this position will initially be for weekday night shift (4pm-12am), with inclusion in the weekend shift and public holiday roster when sufficiently competent. During times of higher testing demand or when required for leave coverage, shift changes or rotation through day shift, may be required.
- Frequent manual handling, and some bending and lifting may be required.
About you
To be considered for this position, you will need to meet the essential requirements:
- Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent qualification in Molecular Biology or related discipline
- Knowledge of Molecular Biology techniques including real-time PCR
- Experience with PCR in a diagnostic laboratory is preferred
- PC and data entry skills and knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, LIS, word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders regarding results or referrals as necessary
- Ability to work well within a team, as well as perform independently with minimal supervision
- A willingness to adhere to departmental and organisational policies and procedures
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to cope and thrive in a busy environment
- Self-initiative and problem-solving capabilities
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy and a commitment to quality and excellence
