About The Role

The Bone Marrow Assistant works alongside haematologists and the clerical booking team to organise and support bone marrow collections.

The role involves working across hospital/ wards, day units, the laboratory and QML clinics, ensuring procedures run smoothly and samples are handled correctly.

This role would suit a QML collector who is good with people and comfortable working with both patients and hospital staff. They’re used to busy clinical environments and communicate well with different teams.

They’re also confident reading and understand request forms and are very careful with patient ID and labelling.

The training is split into three main areas:

  1. Bookings paperwork, and equipment
  2. Procedure, labelling & patient ID
  3. Assisting at the marrow procedure, sorting samples back in haematology, filing and archiving

 

Bone Marrow Assistant – Haematology

Your responsibility: 

  • Assist with the coordination / scheduling of bone marrow samples for the haematology department
  • Setting up sterile trays and spreading bone marrow samples onto microscopic slides
  • Coordinate and manage the daily bone marrow calendar
  • Drive the QML procedural car and travel between hospital and clinic sites as require
  • Prepare equipment and paperwork for procedures, including printing labels and organising/ splitting  request forms
  • Ensure correct patient identification and specimen labelling in accordance with NATA requirement
  • Handle, process, and transport bone marrow samples safely and promptly to the laboratory
  • Communicate with medical staff, nursing teams, laboratory personnel, and external services to support the procedure workflow
